Dec 17, 2008 Beck's Ice Cream Opens Amidst Two Recessions By
Spencer Born
Beck's Ice Cream of York, Pennsylvania has opened in the wake of two recessions. Jerry Beck first opened the parlor in 1979, just before skyrocketing oil prices led to the recession of the early eighties. Beck and his wife left their location on Roosevelt Avenue in 2002 to pursue a wholesale ice cream venture. He reopens Beck's in the same location amidst the burst of the housing bubble, a situation that has severely affected Pennsylvania homeowners.
Despite Pennsylvania's bitter winters and the current economic downturn, Beck's Ice Cream is doing well. Mr. Beck serves lunch food items like soup that have appeal in winter, and expects ice cream to carry business through spring and summer.
Ryan Sanders, president of the Business Association in the nearby town of Red Lion, theorizes that a recession can be a good time for small businesses. He says, "Now is the time for small businesses to shine, because people are watching their dollars and won't give them to just anyone." Locals of York have an emotional attachment to Beck's Ice Cream, and respect Beck as a third generation dairy man. Beck's also capitalizes on small-town nostalgia, which is especially popular during tough times.
