Vadilal of Ahmedabad, India is looking to expand production with the construction of a new plant in Kolkata. The Kolkata plant should be functional by 2010, and is expected to have a production capacity of 50,000 liters.
Rajesh Ghandi, Vadilal's managing director, announced plans for the Kolkata plant at a press conference that lauded Vadilal's performance in the Great Indian Ice Cream Contest. Vadilal managed to secure seven awards at the competition, which is organized by the Indian Dairy Association (IDA) and Danisco, a food products corporation based in Denmark.
Vadilal Group already operates two ice cream plants and a frozen and processed food plant in Dharumpur. Vadilal also owns 120 parlors that operate under their Happinezz ice cream brand, to which they plan to add another 100. It seems that Vadilal has not been affected by the present economic downturn. Rajesh attributes their success to the seasons: "In fact, our recent sales [have] shown a 30 percent increase, maybe because winters have not set in completely yet."
