Designer Eric Zhang has created the next generation ice cream truck. The MERM, or Modular Electronic Retail Minivan, is designed for rapid conversion. The vehicle can transform from a van into a complete vending station in three minutes: this includes a sales area, storage bins, and room for signage.
Zhang postulates the MERM would be most effective in settings where an outdoor market needs to be tapped immediately, such as an exhibition or holiday celebration. The MERM differs from traditional ice cream trucks in that it functions as a conversion vehicle. Rather than cruise neighborhoods to attract trailing hordes of children, the MERM is more apt to travel to densely populated areas, set-up, and conduct business in a primarily immobile state.
Zhang's concept was awarded a Reddot Design Award, and has received accolades for its efficiency.
