I'm planning to open up an ice cream shop in NYC. But I'm concerned about the drop in business during the winter season. It would be extremely helpful to know the average percentage drop typical ice cream stores face during the winter.

seasonality usually effects March - but people still love to eat ice cream and your profits can stay relatively high during the winter months if you can come up with a clever promotion to draw people in.
Also having packaged ice cream to sell is good for winter months as people like to bring the ice cream home and enjoy it in their comfy and cozy house.

One normally thinks of ice cream as a warm-weather treat. While the mountain venues of the Winter Olympics have been cold and snowy, it's been above five degrees Celsius on most days in Turin for nearly the entire games. And that has meant many visitors to a popular gelato shop.

Keeping your ice cream shop open in the winter will have its challenges, but there are things you can do to make sure you stay afloat during those cold months!
If do choose to keep your ice cream shop open, adjusting your store hours and number of employees on staff will help keep labor costs low.
Providing warm environment with toasty treats to compliment the ice cream can also be a great reason for guests to stop in! Hot coffee and warm pie tend to go well with ice cream.

:)I have two shops in the tip of South Padre island which usually our winter season consists of two months and the average temp of 65, which is like summer weather in NYC. My business drops an average of 50% on top of the problem with our economy now a days. I can only recommend you consider having other products, coffee, deli menu, smoothies. What I also do is take my gelato and hit the road and attend conventions near the area... good luck
